I had an email from a friend today – “What do I do with this? Is it a scam?”

Well – 10:1 it is!! It was what is known as a “phishing” email and they come in all the time from your bank, building society – or so you are supposed to think!

Many of you will already know about these, but a lot of people who are not “regular” users of the computer or internet may well be worried by this sort of email; and that is just what the sender is hoping. They want you to access the links they send and enter your card or bank details. Once done they could go on a holiday – paid for by you.

I have a small PDF download that will show you the type of email I mean – this one from PayPal. Click this link to receive the PDF. (70KB PDF file)

It’s quite possible that emails you receive unexpectedly apparently from your bank or building society – when you do I would always advise caution!

Ok – first post is an interesting one!

I was contacted by a client and they were having a problem getting email links to open in the web browser. Clicking the link brought up a new browser window and the link they have set as their preferred opening home page – every time and most frustrating!

There is an answer!

On the desktop, double-click My Computer.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.

In the Registered File Types list, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol, click Advanced, and then click Edit.

In the Actions box, type open.

In the Application used to perform action box, locate Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe), or your preferred web browser link and then click Open.

In the Application box, type IExplore, or your preferred web browser link and then click OK.

I suggest closing the Outlook and restarting it just to “reset the link” – I’m not sure that is totally necessary….but does no harm!!

Hope that helps – if you have an issue you want answers to – please get in touch.
